Mentorship

Every student enrolled in the COS Aviation program will be assigned a mentor. A mentor is a fellow student that has taken and previously passed the course the student is currently enrolled. In turn, every student after the private rating will be assigned a student to mentor. Our students are both learning and teaching throughout the program.

We believe that mentoring is a valuable resource that the school should facilitate. There is no better way to learn than from someone that has ‘been there’ and struggled with the same issues you the student may be going through. While your instructors are the primary means of learning, sometimes another explanation can make all the difference in understanding.

It is also important to know that you are not alone. While flight training is exhilarating, it is easy to get frustrated as maneuvers are sometimes difficult, or the classroom subjects become challenging. Having immediate access to a peer can help tremendously in keeping you focused.

As our students progress beyond private, they are then assigned a student who they will mentor from a junior class. We feel that teaching a subject will build mastery and reinforces the learning received from our trained staff.

Mentors are not meant to substitute for professional flight instruction. The primary role of our flight instructors is to present the knowledge, however we use mentors to reinforce the skills and subjects learned.

Aviation and most life requires you to ‘pay-it-forward.’ As you receive help, you are given the opportunity to return the favor. Your skills won’t degrade because you’re always teaching them to a junior classmate as you learn yourself. We don’t charge for this program, but monitor it to insure success. Students helping students lead to pilots that help pilots and that’s how this industry works!
Mentoring is an important part of the training process exclusive to Blue Sky Aviation!
