FLIGHT TRAINING FEES
Students wishing to complete either the certificate or associate degree must complete the following aeronautics courses: Aero 210, Aero 211, Aero 212, Aero 213, Aero 214 and Aero 215. Each of these courses lead to issuance of an FAA pilot certificate or rating. To cover the cost of the aircraft and other FAA required training elements, additional flight training fees are required for each course. As of this publication date, the additional flight training fees are:
AERO 210 $ 12,745.00
AERO 211 $ 14,952.00
AERO 212 $ 6,906.00
AERO 213 $13,408.00
AERO 214 $ 8,102.00
AERO 215
$18,219.00
Total Flight Training Fees: $74,332.00 + normal ‘per unit’ tuition
*Refer to COS Catalog for current tuition rates. As of October, 2010, California residents must pay $26 per unit and out of state residents must pay $223 per unit.
Flight Training Fee Description
In addition to the normal per unit tuition cost published in the general catalog, aeronautic program students incur additional flight training fees for each course. Flight Training Fees are payable at the time of enrollment at the cashier’s office located in the SEQUOIA Bldg, Rm. 108. Students that do not pay the flight training fees by the first week of the course will be dropped.
The flight fees vary based both on the training requirements for each course and on the aircraft category selected. See the detailed course description in this document for the current flight training fee associated with each course. These fees include necessary training flight resources for students to complete the requirements of each course. In addition to classroom ground training, flight training resources include:
A. Dual Flight Instruction
Cost of the aircraft with an instructor (Each course requires a different amount of solo flight, per FAA regulations).
B. Solo Flight (Expressed in hours)
Cost of the aircraft without an instructor (Each course requires a different amount of solo flight, per FAA regulations).
C. Pre & Post Flight Briefing (Expressed in hours)
Each flight lesson requires a certain amount of preflight briefing to discuss the flight lesson objectives and review pertinent information. After the flight, each student is provided with a detailed post flight critique of his or her performance.
D. F.A.A. Written and Practical Exam
Each certificate or rating requires at-least one written exam. The written exam is administered in Fresno or Bakersfield. Students must pass each written exam before being issued a certificate or rating by the F.A.A. The F.A.A. charges a mandatory test fee for time the exam is taken.
At the end of each course leading to a certificate or rating, the student pass an F.A.A. practical exam with an F.A.A. designated examiner. A designated examiner is a representative of the F.A.A. authorized to grant the student’s request to be issued a pilot certificate or rating. The exam consists of both an oral and practical exam.
The exam consists of an extensive oral exam covering all training concepts in the course. Exams typically last between 3 and 8 hours, depending on student performance and course content.
Students that pass the oral exam will proceed to the practical exam. The practical exam is conducted in an aircraft and requires that the student demonstrate proficiency in safely flying the aircraft to within specified tolerances. F.A.A. designated examiners charge a fee for each exam administered.
NOTE:
Books and supplies are not included in the course flight training fee
. Students may purchase books elsewhere, or may already have required materials in their possession. An estimated cost for books and supplies is included in each course description.
REMEDIATION FEES (Not included in flight training fee)
All flight training fees include sufficient training resources for an average student of average aptitude to pass each course. However, each student learns at a different rate and certain flight or ground training concepts may exceed a student’s ability to demonstrate competency.
Each lesson has a specific outcome that a student must demonstrate his or her proficiency. Students occasionally do not demonstrate proficiency during the lesson. In this case, in lieu of giving the student a failing grade and requiring that he or she re-take the entire course, students may opt to remediate the lesson until they can demonstrate the required proficiency. Frequently, one or two additional remedial lessons with an instructor and/or aircraft may be all that’s necessary for a student to demonstrate proficiency of a flight lesson.
The FAA requires that students demonstrate mastery of ground concepts, etc. Students that do not receive passing scores on exams or are otherwise unprepared may require additional remedial training outside of class. This required additional training is not included in the flight training fee, but must be paid for by the student to compensate the instructor for his/her time spent outside of normal class.
Students that fail FAA exams are also required to pay additional fees to retake the exams.
The remediation cost varies for each individual student based on the number of aircraft hours and/or flight instructor hours necessary to remediate a lesson. Remediation exam fees are incurred with each attempt to pass a required exam. Each course has remediation rates published in this document.
This additional remediation cost are borne solely by the student and is not included the course flight training fee.
REFUND POLICY
This school maintains a policy of refunding the unused portion of regular tuition as per the College of the Sequoias general catalog.
Flight Training Fees are refunded to the student based on the following:
Total number of unused: Dual Flight Instruction hours
Solo Flight hours
Pre & Post Flight Instruction hours
FAA Written and Practical exams
For example, if a student withdraws from a course with 30 hours of dual instruction and the student only used 20 hours at the time of disenrollment, the refund would be calculated as follows:
10 hours x (remediation rate for dual instruction in that aircraft) = refund
Each student has regular access to their flight training account through the web based flight tracking system. Flights and costs incurred by the student are recorded at the end of each training session in real time.
Students are required to sign each transaction, authorizing the college to debit the flight training fee from the student’s account. The system maintains a regular balance on each receipt signed by the student, giving each student regular access to his or her eligible refund amount.
