Description
The flight instructor course will give the student the necessary skills and training leading to issuance of both the certified flight instructor and instrument instructor FAA certificate. In addition, the student will gain experience necessary to instruct in the Robinson helicopter as per Special Federal Aviation Regulation #73.
Course Objective
The student will obtain the aeronautical knowledge and experience necessary to meet the Federal Aviation Administration Requirements for the issuance of a Flight Instructor Certificate and Flight Instructor with an Instrument Rating Certificate with special endorsement to instruct in the Robinson R-22 and R-44 helicopter.
Eligibility for enrollment
- A person must hold at least a 3rd class medical certificate prior to enrolling in the flight portion of the Flight Instructor Certification Course.
- Must have completed the Advanced Commercial Pilot Certification Course.
- Must be at-least 18 years of age at end of course
- Be able to read, speak, write and understand the English language.
- Person must weigh less than 205 pounds prior to enrolling in the flight portion of the Flight Instructor Certification Course.
OR
- Have a current and valid commercial pilot certificate – rotorcraft helicopter
- Have a current and valid instrument pilot certificate – rotorcraft helicopter
- Person must weigh less than 205 pounds prior to enrolling in the flight portion of the Flight Instructor Certification Course.
- Have logged at least 160 hours in a rotorcraft – helicopter.
- Have logged at least 20 hours in the Robinson R-44 helicopter and at-least 25 hours in Robinson R-22.
Aeronautical Knowledge Training
96 hours of ground training in the following subjects:

Flight Training
52 Hours Total
32 Dual (Instruction Given)
16 (Instructor preflight briefing and post flight critique and evaluation)
10 Solo
Flight training must include the following areas of operation:

5. Emergency recognition and recovery
6. Full down autorotation training

8. Postflight procedures
9. Preflight procedures
10. Air Traffic Control clearances and procedures
11. Navigation Systems
12. Navigation Technique and practice
13. Emergency procedures
14. Postflight procedures
Completion Standard
The student MUST demonstrate through written tests, practical tests, and appropriate records, that he/she meets the knowledge, skill, and experience requirements necessary to obtain a Flight Instructor Certificate and Flight Instructor with an instrument rating. Each student must satisfactorily complete an oral and practical exam conducted by the FAA (Or Designated Representative). Upon completion of Practical Exam, student will receive additional training to instruct in the Robinson R-22 and Robinson R-44 aircraft to meet SFAR 73 (Special Federal Aviation Regulation #73 requirements).
