Description
The advanced instrument helicopter certification course will build on the knowledge obtained in the basic instrument course. Pilots that achieve the instrument rating are permitted to fly an aircraft during inclement weather conditions solely by reference to instruments.
Course Objective
The student will obtain the aeronautical knowledge and experience necessary to meet the requirements for issuance of the Instrument Helicopter Rating.
Eligibility for enrollment
- Completed Basic Instrument Rotorcraft – Helicopter Preparation Course
Aeronautical Knowledge Training
17 hours of ground training in the following subjects:
1. Applicable Federal Aviation Regulations for IFR flight operations.
2. Appropriate information in the “Aeronautical Information Manual.”
3. Air Traffic Control systems and procedures for IFR operations.
4. IFR navigation and approaches by use of navigation systems.
5. Use of IFR en route and instrument approach procedure charts.
6. Procurement and use of aviation weather reports and forecasts, and the elements of forecasting weather trends on the basis of that information and personal observation of weather conditions.
7. Safe and efficient operation of aircraft under IFR and IFR conditions.
8. Recognition of critical weather situations and windshear avoidance.
9. Aeronautical decision making and judgment.
10. Crew resource management, to include crew communication and coordination.
Flight Training
41 Hours Total Flight Instruction
27 hours dual instruction
14 (Instructor preflight briefing and post flight critique and evaluation)
Flight training must include the following areas of operation:
1. Preflight preparation
2. Preflight procedures
3. Air Traffic Control clearances and procedures
4. Flight by reference to the instruments
5. Navigation Systems
6. Instrument approach procedures
7. Emergency procedures
8. Postflight procedures
Completion Standard
The student MUST demonstrate through practical tests, and appropriate records, that he/she meets the knowledge, skill, and experience requirements necessary to obtain the Instrument Pilot Rotorcraft Helicopter Rating. Each student must satisfactorily complete an oral and practical exam conducted by the FAA (Or Designated Representative).
