The private pilot license, focuses on safely operating the aircraft for essentially private use only. Persons with only a private pilot rating are not allowed to do any flying for compensation or hire. The training is a foundation course that primarily emphasizes safety, aircraft handling, navigation and effective airspace usage. Professionals and recreational pilots will start their flying careers with the private pilot license.

The commercial pilot rating is necessary for all pilots who seek employment. The training builds on the foundation of the private in preparing students for more advanced maneuvers typically conducted in commercial operations.
The FAA has designated a minimum of 250 flight hours are required before the applicant is eligible to receive the rating. Much of this training includes cross-country flights to build experience.
